Russia criticises U.S. report on human rights

Russia's Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov has criticised the annual U.S. State Department report on human rights, saying that U.S. is trying to dictate its own will to other countries.

“When we look into the part of the State Department report that speaks of ”regional priorities“, we hear the traditional mentoring pitch of the Washington diplomacy,” he pointed out, “And it is not only with Russia, I will say, it basically concerns every region and every country. It is like at school, everybody gets told exactly what to do. I think, this kind of approach allows the authors to cover up their own mistakes or even major failures in their foreign policy”.

Earlier the Federation Council and the State Duma already labelled the US report as an attempt to interfere with the internal affairs of the country.

State Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov said the report essentially lays out U.S. plans to influence Russia's democratic development and its election process.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksandr Yakovenko accused the U.S. of using human rights as a political tool and of double standards.

The annual U.S. State Department report on human rights complained of a slide in democratic rights in Russia. It also mentioned the earmarking of funds for supporting non-governmental organisations within the country.
