Shipulin takes silver in mass start at biathlon worlds

Anton Shipulin has saved the Russian team’s blushes at the biathlon world championships finishing second in the 15km mass-start race. A year ahead of its home Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia ended the competition goldless with just two medals.

Tarjei Boe grabbed his third gold in Sunday’s race to stylishly wrap the Norwegian-dominated event. The Scandinavians grabbed eight gold medals in eleven disciplines, beating Germany's record of six golds set in 1999.Anton Shipulin, who had also grabbed bronze in the pursuit last week, finished 3.7 seconds behind Boe. The man of the competition, Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway, had to settle for bronze after an early error in shooting dashed his hopes of a fifth gold medal this year.Earlier Sunday, Darya Domracheva of Belarus won the women’s mass start to deny second-placed Tora Berger her fifth gold in Czech Nove Mesto.31-year-old Berger had previously won the opening mixed relay, the 15km individual race, the 10km pursuit and 4 x 6-kilometer relay.
