Tretyakov Gallery exhibits Bashkir museum’s riches

The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow has been exhibiting the best works of various Russian regional museums for nine years in a row. This time the project called “Golden map of Russia” introduces the collection of the Bashkir Museum of Arts.

The paintings in this year's exhibition were collected by Mikhail Nesterov who was an artist himself.

At the beginning of the 20th century he donated his personal collection of 102 pictures to the state.

By 2000, the Bashkir Museum of Arts had almost 9,000 works of art from Russia and Europe. The best of them were brought to Moscow and are now on display at the State Tretyakov gallery.

“We wanted to present the works of this museum in the Tretyakov gallery for a long time. Its collection includes renowned Russian and European painters, but we also wanted to show the distinctiveness of Bashkir art,” said Lidia Iovleva, Tretyakov Gallery deputy director.

Elton John and Duran Duran, the favorites of the late princess, headlined the show.

Young pop stars as Lilly Allen and Nelly Furtado and many others were also there. But the most unusual item was “Swan Lake” performed by the English National Ballet.

All the money raised by the show, with a ticket having cost $US 90, will go to charity organisations around the world.
