Anna Politkovskaya nominated for EU's Human Rights Award

The Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered in Moscow last October, has been nominated for the European Union's Human Rights Award. The official list of candidates will be published later today.

The prize is named after prominent Soviet nuclear physicist and human rights activist, Andrey Sakharov. It's awarded annually to a person or a group judged to have made a significant contribution to the promotion of human rights and democracy.

Anna Politkovskaya wrote extensively on corruption and human rights violations in the Chechen Republic. She was also a harsh critic of the Russian government.

She was shot dead in her apartment in October.

Last week 10 people were arrested in connection with her death.
