Militants surrounded as Dagestan siege continues

Two policemen have been wounded in an operation against militants in the republic of Dagestan in southern Russia. The republic's Interior Ministry says previous media reports on the completion of the operation are incorrect.

Special police forces are still attempting to storm a house in the suburbs of Kizilyurt, where two militants are hiding.

A shootout between the police and the militants started early on Monday morning.

“Late on Sunday night the police received information that two unidentified gunmen were hiding in a house in the suburbs of Kizil-Yurt. The house was blocked off and in the morning the gunmen were asked to surrender. They opened fire, so the police decided to liquidate the militants. The police and the gunmen are still exchanging gunfire. It is still unclear who the gunmen are,” said Mark Tolchinsky, a spokesman for Dagestan's Interior Ministry.
