Climate change and Iraq top UN agenda

The General Assembly of the UN opens its 62nd session on Tuesday in New York. The agenda of the session is expected to be finalised on Friday.

This year’s meetings are expected to focus on climate change and Iraq, among other burning international issues.

“We certainly have Iraq as one of the major issues for debate at the General Assembly,” said Spencer Boyer, of the Security and Peace Initiative.

The annual general debate opens next week and presidents from different countries are going to take part.

There will also be a meeting on Afghanistan, a report from Tony Blair on the political issues in the Middle East, and a special ministerial meeting on Kosovo’s independence, which Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is expected to attend.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is also among those scheduled to speak. He has already been granted a visa to the U.S. and has proposed holding a debate on a number of issues with George W. Bush.
