Tver Region: rich in contrasts, steeped in history. Watch in Russia close-up

Tver region is one of the largest in European Russia and is filled with contrasts. Located between Moscow and St Petersburg, it provides one of Russia’s busiest transit and industrial routes, but it also contains thousands of kilometres of unspoilt fores

There may be more than 1.5 million people here but the region is suffering a demographic crisis as its young people leave for the bright lights of the neighbouring cities.

Traditional lifestyles are also being affected as the hunting and fishing industries come under threat from poachers and excess tourism. However it’s also a place of pioneering conservation projects and one of the few areas in the country where humans quite literally rub shoulders with some of the country’s top predators.

Tune in to Russia Today to see the real Tver region – close up.
