Georgia's breakaway republic votes for Russian Duma

All eight polling stations in the Georgian breakaway republic of Abkhazia are now closed. Over 12,000 Russian citizens have had their say on the future of Russia. The people cast their votes in the capital Sukhimi and near the Russian peacekeepers’ headqu

Abkhazia is part of Georgia, but it has being trying to secure independence since the early 1990s.

The Russian peacekeeping force is stationed in the area to maintain the ceasefire agreement between Georgians and Abkhazians.

As many as 80% of the locals have Russian citizenship, which makes them eligible to  vote in Sunday’s parliamentary election.
