‘Mohhy bear’ teacher pardoned

The British teacher jailed in Sudan for allowing a class of children to name a teddy bear Mohammad is back in the UK. The woman's release brings an end to a religious hatred case that attracted international attention and was causing unrest inside Sudan.

54-year-old Gillian Gibbons had urged pupils to call a teddy bear their favourite name. And didn’t stop them when they chose Mohammad.

Naming an animal after the Prophet is considered unacceptable by many Muslims. She was sentenced to 15 days in jail but was pardoned by the Sudanese President and released after just eight days.

She flew back to London via Dubai, accompanied by British Muslim peers Baroness Warsi and Lord Ahmed.
