NATO radar station in Czech Republic - part of U.S. AMD?

The Czech Defence Ministry says a NATO radar station has been built near the city of Slavkov in the eastern part of the country. It's not clear whether the facility is part of controversial U.S. plans for an air missile defence shield in Eastern Europe.

According to the ministry, the radar station is intended to monitor air traffic in the eastern part of the Czech Republic.

The facility was completed a month ahead of schedule and is to be tested in January.

The Czech Foreign Ministry says it hopes to reach a deal with the U.S. in February on the missile defence plan, which is strongly opposed by Russia.
