Russia bans old planes from flying to Europe

The Russian aviation authorities have banned airliners from 13 companies from flying to Europe, due to defects that could affect passenger safety.

Most of the aircraft banned are Soviet-built Tupolevs and Ilyushins. But several Boeings belonging to Krasnoyarsk Airlines have been blacklisted for the first time.

Also on the list are aircraft belonging to UTAir, Atlant-Soyuz and Kuban Airlines.

The restrictions follow safety checks by Russian and EU authorities from June to October this year.

The airlines have until February 20th to fix the reported problems.
