RT DEBUTS DOCU-SERIES ON MASS SURVEILLANCE FROM FOUR-TIME EMMY-WINNING JOURNALIST AND PRODUCER DANNY SCHECHTER ON US, UK TV

MOSCOW, JANUARY 14, 2015 – “America’s Surveillance State” explores the questions of privacy and sovereignly, of information security and of relationship between the government and technology firms – issues that have risen to the top of the global news agenda with revelations from whistleblowers such as Edward Snowden. The investigative series will air globally on RT International beginning on January 14, 2015.

The film documents and details the emergence of a system of mass surveillance developed by the National Security Agency in collusion with other intelligence agencies, and a network of private contractors. It investigates the intensifying conflict between the Obama Administration and other countries, as well as the American people, that has also activated and involved technology companies, whistleblowers and hackers and tensions with allies of the United States.

“Thanks to former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, and earlier whistleblowers and journalists, we now know far more about this world of top-secret spying on our communications—phone calls and abuses of the Internet,” says Danny Schechter, the film’s director. “This surveillance state is widely seen as a threat to privacy and freedom inside the United States, and between the United States of America and other states that oppose the use of cyber war techniques to monitor and undermine their own sovereignty.”

Danny Schechter is an internationally acclaimed journalist, author and filmmaker. His work has won four Emmys, the George Polk Award and the Society of Professional Journalists' 2001 Award for Excellence in Documentary Journalism. He is the founder of MediaChannel and Executive Editor, VP & Executive Producer of Globalvision, Inc., an award-winning media company. His noted documentary work includes films about the financial crisis, Nelson Mandela and John F. Kennedy.

The first part of “America’s Surveillance State,” titled “The Surveillance Machine” will premiere in the United Kingdom and North America on RT on Wednesday, January 14, at 11:30 am GMT / 6:30 am EST.
