2015 World Series: Kansas City Royals beat New York Mets 4-1

2015 World Series: Kansas City Royals beat New York Mets 4-1

The Kansas City Royals won the 2015 World Series in five games from the New York Mets, winning the final game 7-2 at Citi Field. Their story has been one of comeback after comeback - this was their seventh comeback win in this year's playoffs.

The Royals beat the Mets 4-1 despite trailing in all four games that they won, two of which they were trailing in after the eighth inning.

On Sunday, down 2-0 in the ninth, the Royals fought back once again to score twice to tie the game.

For the first run, Eric Hosmer hit a double to allow Lorenzo Cain to score. Before this, Mets pitcher Matt Harvey had convinced manager Terry Collins to keep him on, instead of usual closer Jeurys Familia. After Cain scored to take the game to 1-2, Collins brought on Familia, only to have Hosmer score the equalizing run.

The second run came from Hosmer's mad dash from third base to home plate as Mets first baseman Lucas Duda made a wild throw, allowing Hosmer to score.

A good throw would have won the game for the Mets, and it was another example of how the Mets have fallen short defensively in this World Series: Yoenis Cespedes not catching Alcides Escobar's fly ball in Game 1; David Wright's error that led to the winning run in that game, and Daniel Murphy's critical error in Game 4.

Series of Royals Comebacks

Earlier in the Series, the Royals had won the first two games, with the first game going to 14 innings, making it the longest World Series opener in MLB history. It was a closely fought battle, with the Royals finally prevailing with Alcides Escobar grabbing a run after the four previous innings produced no score, making it 5-4.

In the second game, the Royals found their footing right from the off, winning easily with a 7-1 score. During this game, Johnny Cueto pitched a complete game, only conceding 2 hits and 1 run all game. In so doing, he became the first pitcher to throw a complete game in the World Series since Jack Morris in 1991.

Game 3 was the first game of the Series to be played at Citi Field in Queens, New York. The Mets came out on top, winning 9-3 with the Royals making a few uncharacteristic mistakes, such as pitcher Franklin Morales triple-clutching Curtis Granderson's ground ball, which allowed all runners to be safe and led to Mets captain David Wright scoring a 2-run single.

In Game 4, the Royals bounced back to take the game 5-3, which put them 3-1 up in the Series. Rookie, Michael Conforto, scored two home runs, making him the first rookie since Andruw Jones in 1996 to achieve this.

Game 5 too seemed to be headed the Mets' way until the ninth inning – that's usually when the Royals make things happen, and they fought their way to the twelfth inning before wrapping up the game and the Series. All in all, a deserved, if hard fought win for the Kansas City Royals.
