NBA: Warriors overcome strong Pistons as Curry struggles

NBA: Warriors overcome strong Pistons as Curry struggles

The Golden State Warriors prevailed over the Detroit Pistons last night in Oakland, but it was a tight, hard game for both teams, with Warriors star shooter Stephen Curry struggling to get on target.

The Pistons’ season has been marked by an upswing in form that nobody was expecting. They’ve won five games this year and lost two; considering at this point last year it was the other way round, two-and-five, this is quite remarkable.

The Golden State Warriors, meanwhile, have been unbeaten this year in eight games and lie top of the NBA with a perfect 1.000 percentage. This is the longest winning streak in franchise history; if they can keep this up, they are a sure-fire bet for the finals.

But back to the game: Golden State’s Curry was misfiring, but the Warriors prevailed, winning 109-95. Despite this, it wasn't an easy win for the NBA Champions, who needed a boost from their bench in order to get the win.

Klay Thompson, a great shooter even when he's not doing so well, got his first three shots on target; however, Andre Drummond scored the first points of the game, with two points after 45 seconds. At the end of the first quarter, the game stood at 27-15 to the Warriors.

They never really looked back; at least, that's what the scoreline tells us. Barbosa scored a beautiful triple after a Klay-Curry movement just under halfway into the second quarter. This took the game to 37-31, with the Pistons breathing heavily down the Warriors’ backs.

The Pistons actually managed to get one over their opponents on FG percentage, with 49 percent compared to 47 percent. Curry had his worst offensive game of the season, making mistakes that he simply shouldn't have been making. Despite this, the end of the second resulted in the Warriors 55-46 up.

The third quarter began with another Klay triple from 23ft. that Klay's next three-pointer, four minutes into the quarter, was his 800th career triple for the Warriors, becoming only the second player after Curry to achieve this.

The score at this point was 66-51, the largest lead so far. Naturally, the Pistons responded to this with a run of their own, gradually getting the score down to just 4 points by quarter's end, at 80-76.

It was all to play for in the final quarter. It took two minutes for the first points to come, with Andre Iguodala eventually getting a two-pointer for the Warriors. The Pistons' Marcus Morris managed to bag one in return to take the score back to a four-point gap, but then the Warriors charged, taking the score all the way up to 92-78 and a 14-point break. While the Pistons rallied, the Warriors were too strong, ending with the same 14 point gap at 109-95.

And so the Warriors remain unbeaten, while the Pistons are still going strong. They lie fourth in the Eastern Conference, while the Warriors are top of the Western.
