‘Oink, oink!’ Samantha Cameron warned kids to ignore #piggate jokes at school
Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife Samantha told her children to expect “oink, oink noises” in the playground at school while the #piggate allegations were rife in the media.
Her warning came after her husband was accused of “inserting a private part of his anatomy” into a dead pig’s mouth during a drinking society initiation ceremony at Oxford University, for which the nation mocked its PM mercilessly.
Samantha Cameron allegedly discussed the incident with a fellow contestant on the reality TV show ‘Great Sport Relief Bake-Off.’
Comedian Jason Manford told listeners on his Absolute Radio show that the PM’s wife had talked about the ordeal off-camera.
“I must say, you can probably guess from my accent that I didn’t vote for her husband but I’m surprised they don’t roll her out more. She’s charming and just lovely, really nice, really chatty.
“We filmed the week after piggate. I thought, I’m just going to mention it. Now I don’t think it’s true and at the time it was pretty ridiculous for the Cameron family. I guess it was quite humorous until it went a bit wrong. She did say something to me which really endeared her more to me. I asked ‘has it been alright this week at home?’
“Quite a strange conversation to be having with the prime minister’s wife. She told me ‘yeah, I just said to the kids that you might get a few oink oink noises at school but just try not to fight with anybody.’ I thought that is good parenting advice,” Manford added.
The allegations surrounding the prime minister came out in the unofficial biography ‘Call me Dave,’ penned by former Conservative Party donor Lord Ashcroft. Aides called the claims “ridiculous” at the time.
But that didn’t stop the media and the general public latching on to the story and dubbing the incident “piggate.”
Manford and Samantha Cameron had been filming the charity TV show the week after the allegations emerged in the autumn. The three Cameron children, Nancy, Arthur and Florence, all attend school in London.
Manford said Samantha had performed well on the show.
“She did very well on bake-off. She was very good. Not all the way through, she had a couple of stumbles, but she’s obviously got a nice kitchen.”
The pair will appear in the program alongside a host of other celebrities, including singers Will Young, Louise Redknapp and Geri Halliwell, and former footballers David James, Jermaine Jenas and Chris Kamara. The actors Alison Steadman, Morgana Robinson, and Ade Edmondson will also take part, as will BBC journalist John Simpson.
