Power outage plunges NY’s Grand Central into darkness
Commuters going through Grand Central had to find their way in the dark, after a broken water pipe left New York’s iconic railway terminal without power on Monday morning.
The station was quieter than usual due to Presidents Day when the outage happened shortly after 9am, with machines, shops and hallways of the terminal’s lower level left without power. One employee at the station described the moment as being like a scene from the film The Purge.

Train service continued but with some delays during the outage. No issues were reported with witnesses describing the outage as calm and without incident. A few commuters used the opportunity to take a unique selfie at the usually crowded station.

Due to the holiday the station was operating on a weekend schedule.
Some of the entrances to the station as well as shops have been closed until full power is returned. The cause of the outage was reported to have been a water pipe break.
UPDATE: Due to power outage, all stores and Lex Ave entrances closed until further notice. Metro-North train service is unaffected.

Let’s hope the lights are back on in time for Hollywood to shoot another iconic sequence at the station.
