Sitting targets? Company launches line of bulletproof furniture

A British company is targeting a niche corner of the furniture market with a line of bulletproof sofas and chairs that can withstand fire from a variety of guns.

The Scottish company’s "made to measure ballistic furniture" aims to protect people in a world which, its website claims, is "becoming a more dangerous place with gun attacks happening on a daily basis."

"We designed it with the natural human reaction to unexpected gunfire in mind: to duck and hide behind a barrier,” said company founder Darren Osdin.

The company uses special bullet-resistant polyethylene fabrics to create an armor plating for their collection, which would be resistant to an onslaught of bullets from Ak47s and .44 Magnums, as well as being flame retardant.

A single piece of furniture could cost from £500 ($700) for a basic chair up to £10,000 ($14,000) for a full suite, with 40 percent of the cost coming from the armor plating.

The company, which already produces non-bulletproof furniture for a range of hotels across Europe, hopes they will also buy their new range as well as attracting "high net worth" individuals who may want to further enhance the security of their homes.
