Champions League quarter-finals: Barcelona face tough Atletico task

Barcelona continue their Champions League pursuit on Tuesday as they host Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final.

Barca's 39-game unbeaten run was ended on Saturday when they were defeated 2-1 by Real Madrid at the Camp Nou.

The Catalans have met Atletico just twice before in the Champions League, with the Madrid team winning 2-1 over two legs at the same stage of the competition back in 2014.

Luis Enrique's team have won both La Liga meetings against Atletico this season. Barca defenders Adrian and Jeremy Mathieu both miss the game through injury, while forward Sandro is also sidelined.

Atletico's 5-1 home win against Real Betis on Saturday moved them to within six points of Barcelona at the top of La Liga, and they head to the Camp Nou boasting an unbeaten away record in the Champions League this season.

Enrique has won all 10 home games in the tournament as Barca manager, with his team scoring 27 goals and conceding just five.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich will bid to continue their dominance over Benfica when they meet in their last eight tie.

The German side have knocked Benfica out in their three previous European meetings, with the Portuguese club conceding 13 goals in the away legs.

Bayern have won their last 10 home games in the Champions League, scoring 40 goals and conceding just six.

Pep Guardiola has a number of selection headaches, however, with Arjen Robben, Jerome Boateng and Holger Badstuber all injured, while Javi Martinez and Mehdi Benatia are doubtful.

Julio Cesar, Lisandro Lopez, Luisao and Nuno Santos all miss out for Benfica.

Bayern are the leading scorers in this season's competition with 25 goals in eight games, while Robert Lewandowski has scored 10 in his past seven Champions League games at the Allianz Arena.

Manchester City play their first ever Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday as they travel to France to face Paris Saint-Germain.

The teams have met just once before in Europe, fighting out a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium in the UEFA Cup group stages in 2008.

PSG's only previous home defeat against English opposition came back in 2004 when they lost 3-0 to Chelsea.

The French team have the joint-best defensive record in this season's tournament, conceding just 3 goals in 8 games. Atletico and Real Madrid have also conceded just three times.

PSG have reached the semi-final just once in their history, in 1994/95, but they have an impressive home record in Europe with 25 wins and 12 draws in their last 38 games. Their only defeat in that period came against Barcelona back in 2015.

City have scored six goals in the final 15 minutes of their games so far, while Sergio Aguero has bagged 16 goals in his last 18 Champions League starts.

Real Madrid will look to maintain their unbeaten Champions League record this season as they face Wolfsburg.

The quarter-final match-up will be the first competitive tie between the two teams.

Real, who are bidding to reach their sixth semi-final in a row, have been impressive defensively in their eight games to date, keeping seven clean sheets.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 13 Champions League goals this season to take his overall total to 90 - more than anyone else in history.

Wolfsburg have never previously reached the last eight of the tournament, although their victory against Manchester United in the final game of the group stages shows they shouldn't be taken lightly.
