Continents collide: Copa America & Euro 2016 champions could face off

Copa America champions Chile could be set to face the winners of the UEFA European Championships in the next few months.

South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) President Alejandro Dominguez has confirmed that a proposal has been submitted to UEFA for a game with the European champions.

“We have received a positive response from UEFA about a match between the Copa America and Euro champions,” Dominguez posted via his official Twitter account.

“We will study a viable date to set.”

Chile secured their second consecutive Copa America title last Sunday after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Argentina.

The game, which will be organized around the World Cup qualifiers, will precede the return of the Artemio Franchi Trophy in 2018.

The tournament, last held in 1985 and 1993, previously featured the winners of the Copa and Euros.

France defeated Uruguay 2-0 in 1985, while Argentina beat Denmark after a penalty shoot-out eight years later.

The Euros are currently at the quarter-final stage, with Portugal kicking off proceedings against Poland on Thursday.

Belgium faces Wales on Friday, while Germany and Italy will meet the following day.
