Dogs kill 3 monkeys in night-time raid on Louisiana zoo

Man’s best friend failed to show obedience to our very distant cousin when attacking and killing three monkeys at a Louisiana zoo.

Dogs, believed to have been domestically owned, broke into the Baton Rouge zoo before seriously injuring the monkeys and leaving them for dead.

The dogs were unable to enter the primates’ enclosure but officials from zoo told the Baton Rouge Business Report that security camera footage showed the dogs grabbing the monkeys when they reached out, allowing them to snatch and attack them.

The zoo have released security footage of one of the canines entering the zoo but have not confirmed how many dogs are believed to have been involved in the attack.

Two of the monkeys were found dead from the attack, a 22-year-old male and a 29-year-old female, both spot-nosed guenon monkeys. The third monkey, an 18-year-old male, was euthanized due to its injuries.

The group of dogs are still at large. The zoo is investigating their whereabouts and how they managed to enter the zoo, which they claim had its perimeter checked less than two weeks ago.

By its own request, Baton Rouge Zoo came under investigation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, while a probe was also launched by the US Department of Agriculture following the deaths of several animals this year.

A two-year-old tiger died in the zoo in April. Security footage showed the tiger, named Hadiah, in a distressed state in the 15 minutes before her death. Gastric dilation - when an animal’s stomach becomes bloated and twisted by excessive internal gas - was suspected of causing the death, a necropsy found.

Some 18 animals died in the zoo over a four-month period this year, including two of their four giraffes and a baby golden lion tamarin.
