Ex-nuclear minister released from jail

Russia's former Atomic Energy Minister has been released from prison. Evgeny Adamov was jailed in February for embezzling more than $US 30 million from the Russian budget in the 1990s. He had been sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

However, the Moscow City court revised the term, giving Adamov a suspended sentence instead after hearing an appeal from his lawyers.

Adamov, who headed the Russian Atomic Ministry from 1998 to 2001, was arrested in Switzerland in 2005 at the request of the United States, which accused him of stealing funds from the government.

Moscow, in turn, had him extradited to face similar charges in Russia.

Adamov's defence team has repeatedly said there's not enough evidence to prove that he's guilty.

The ex-minister said he would appeal the verdict and seek his acquittal.
