Armed attack on Israeli embassy in Turkey, suspect shot in leg (VIDEO)

A suspect has been shot and wounded by a security guard after launching an attack on the Israeli embassy in Ankara, Turkey, according to an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson. All embassy staff are safe.

The Ankara governor's office has said that the suspect seems to be mentally unstable, with no connections to any organization found yet, Reuters reports.

The man was chanting slogans and wielding a knife, and ignored the police's warning to stop, according to a statement by the Ankara governor's office.

Speaking to Reuters in a text message, an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said the attacker was "wounded before he reached the embassy."

"The assailant was shot and wounded by a local security man," he said, adding that all staff at the embassy are safe.

Previous reports said the assailant had been killed.

Reports from local media said the assault on the embassy was a gun attack. However, CNN Turk reported that it was an attempted stabbing at the entrance of the embassy.

According to the Daily Sabah, gunshots were heard in front of the embassy building, and all staff were sent into hiding as the incident unfolded.

Police units, ambulances, and a bomb squad were dispatched to the scene.

Authorities have blocked the street off to traffic following the incident.
