Miesha Tate announces retirement after losing to Pennington at UFC 205

Former UFC women's bantamweight champion Miesha Tate announced her retirement after losing to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205 in New York.

Following the loss of her belt to Amanda Nunes at UFC 200 Tate was looking to get regain a title, but she was ultimately outclassed by Pennington.

Tate used her famed wrestling skills for a takedown towards the end of the first round, but she was unable to gain control of the contest.

Pennington stepped things up in the second round, with her accurate jab beginning to leave its mark on Tate's face.

The former champion took the fight to the mat where the duo exchanged a barrage of shots in the clinch, but it was Pennington who appeared the stronger fighter.

Tate looked weary entering the final round as Pennington continued to dominate, throwing ground-and-pound while fending off her opponent's submission attempts.

Pennington muscled Tate down in the final minute, teeing off with more excellent ground work to seal a unanimous victory.

Tate confirmed after the fight she was hanging up her gloves.

"I'm announcing my retirement, you guys," she said. "I love this sport forever, but it's not my time anymore. It's the future's time."

On the preliminary card, Frankie Edgar secured a unanimous decision against Jeremy Stephens after a bruising featherweight contest.

Edgar survived a head-kick and near knockout by Stephens to still win every round according to two of the three judges.

Khabib Nurmagomedov produced a stunning performance to demolish Michael Johnson and stake his claim for a shot at the lightweight title.

The Russian dominated the contest throughout and eventually forced a submission midway through the final round

After the bout, he called Conor McGregor a "chicken" before gesturing to president Dana White that he wanted a title shot.

Tim Boetsch recorded the 12th knockout win of his career with a dominating performance against Rafael Natal.

Boetsch took control of the middleweight fight from the start, opening up a cut over Natal's left eye with an early punch.

The American kept Natal on the back foot and ended the contest with a stunning right hand that sent his opponent crashing into the fence.

Natal fell to the floor and Boetsch pounded away until the referee waved off the contest after three minutes and 22 seconds of the opening round.

Brazilian welterweight Vicente Luque secured his fourth win in a row in the UFC with a quick knockout win over Belal Muhammad.

Luque followed up a devastating left hand shot with a flurry of punches on the mat to claim victory in just 79 seconds.

Elsewhere on the card, Jim Miller defeated Thiago Alves by a unanimous judges' verdict while Liz Carmouche beat Katlyn Chookagian by split decision.
