Simpsons reference Trump prediction in iconic blackboard intro (VIDEO)

Predicting the future is a gift the creators of ‘The Simpsons’ appear to regret having, after their latest title sequence showed remorse for predicting a Donald Trump victory in the US presidential election.

Bart Simpson could be seen writing “Being right sucks” on his classroom's blackboard during the show's iconic opening sequence in Sunday’s episode. The words are in reference to a prediction they made in an episode set in the future that first aired more than 16 years ago.

In the episode titled ‘Bart from the future,’ Lisa Simpson is US president but faces challenges in her administration after inheriting “quite a budget crunch from President Trump”, leaving the country broke.

One of the show’s writers, Dan Greaney, told Hollywood Reporter that the episode was a “warning to America,” with having Trump as the previous president being “the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane."

"What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that's why we had Trump be president before her," he said.

In the lead-up to the recent election the show didn’t shy away from backing Hillary Clinton and highlighting their dislike of Trump, showing him reading a book on speeches credited to the author “A. Hitler” in an online short in which Homer and Marge said they would be voting for Clinton.

The show ridiculed Trump earlier in his presidential run last year. In a short called ‘Trumptastic voyage’ Homer has a journey into Trump’s hair, described as a “gravity defying comb-over.”
