RT SCORES 18 NOMINATIONS AT NEW YORK FESTIVALS, SURPASSING CNN AND BBC

MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 27, 2017RT’s channels have secured 18 finalist spots – surpassing the likes of CNN and BBC – in one of the world’s largest news & documentaries festivals. Seven of the nominations went to RT’s dedicated US channel, RT America.

RT war correspondent Murad Gazdiev, who had regularly reported from the Syrian city of Aleppo for many months, even coming under fire multiple times, is recognized in the Best News Reporter/Correspondent category.

#FlyDubaiGate, RT’s coverage of the Flydubai plane crash in Rostov-on-Don on March of 2016, is a finalist in the Best Coverage of Continuing News Story division. Following the report, which explored pilot fatigue as a possible reason for the tragedy, the channel received dozens of letters from former employees of various airlines regarding harsh working conditions.

RT’s special coverage from the frontlines of the Libyan conflict received a nomination in the Special Report category, while RT America’s GTMO 2016, which concerned the future of the infamous prison at Guantanamo Bay, was nominated in Best Coverage of Continuing News Story and Best News Documentary.

Competing in the TV News Promotion and Graphic Design categories is RT’s special on-air coverage of US Election Day 2016, with the channel’s celebrity hosts Larry King, Ed Schultz, and Jesse Ventura. Larry King’s interview show Larry King Now  is present in the Promo: Copywriting category. RT America’s The Big Picture was also acknowledged, among the seven finalist spots taken by RT’s US channel alone.

Rounding out the nominations, three of RT’s documentaries made the cut: H2WOE India’s Water Crisis: A Warning To The World tells the tale of the drinking water shortage in the country; The Sheguе, the Sorcerer and Che Guevara is about homeless children and teens in the Democratic Republic of Congo; while She is my son looks into the story of why some Afghan girls end up having to wear men’s clothes.

RT has been distinguished with multiple New York Festivals awards. Last year, RT bagged four New York Festivals prizes. In 2015, Anissa Naouai won in the Best News Anchor category, and RT’s documentary team also brought home a medal for its Albino Africa work as the Best Documentary on Social Issues. Other awards were received in 2014 for RT’s North Caucasus documentary Blood and Honor, and for Julian Assange’s much-discussed interview series The Julian Assange Show the year before.

New York Festival's World's Best Television & Films competition honors programming in all lengths and forms from over 50 countries in the television and film industries. The 2017 awards ceremony will take place on April 25, 2017 in Las Vegas at NAB Show.
