Dramatic NASA images capture sinister winter storms rolling across US (VIDEO)

Winter storms are currently wreaking havoc on the US east coast – schools have been shut and thousands of flights cancelled – but from space they’re proving quite the show. Footage from NASA shows the dramatic moment the big chill moves in.

NASA used images from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite, collected over a period of two days from March 11 to 13, to create the animation.

There have been days of heavy snowfall and low temperatures but the worst is yet to come for the east coast. Storm Stella expected to bring winds of up to 60mph (100kph) when it lands early Wednesday. Up to 2ft (60cm) of snow is expected in parts by early Wednesday, with temperatures 15 to 30 degrees below normal for this time of year, according to Reuters.

In New York a state of emergency has been declared with Governor Andrew Cuomo advising people that the level of snowfall will make roads unsafe and to stay at home if possible.

Around 31 million people are under a blizzard warning on the east coast with 7,600 US flights cancelled due to the adverse weather conditions, reported WPLG, covering North Virginia to Maine. President Donald Trump took to Twitter to warn residents on the east coast to “be safe and listen to local officials.”

Earlier in the week the cold got so extreme that a house on the shores of Lake Ontario, New York, was completely frozen over. The ‘chilling’ video, which shows the house frozen by the elements, went viral on Monday.

Social media users in New York have been uploading images of the blizzard, showing heavy snowfall in the area ahead of the busy morning commute.
