Boston Red Sox apologize after fans racially abuse Baltimore Orioles’ Adam Jones

The Boston Red Sox have apologized after fans at their Fenway Park stadium hurled racial slurs at Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones.

Jones received a 30-second standing ovation during his first at-bat during Tuesday night's game between the two teams, following Monday's game in which he was on the receiving end of epithets and projectiles from someone in the crowd.

The Red Sox issued a statement earlier Tuesday in which President Sam Kennedy apologized for the abuse Jones suffered on Monday night in Massachusetts.

"The Red Sox want to publicly apologize to Adam Jones and the entire Orioles organization for what occurred at Fenway Park Monday night,” the statement read.  

“No player should have an object thrown at him on the playing field, nor be subjected to any kind of racism at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have zero tolerance for such inexcusable behavior, and our entire organization and our fans are sickened by the conduct of an ignorant few.”

The statement added that an investigation into the incident was ongoing, and that any fan found guilty of such abuse would be subject to further action.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh also condemned the abuse, which occurred on Monday during Baltimore’s 5-2 victory.   

Jones, a five-time All Star, said that “a disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me… I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome,” USA Today Sports reported.

He also said it was not the first time he had suffered such abuse at the hands of Red Sox fans and at other ballparks. 

“It’s different…Very unfortunate. I heard there was 59 or 60 ejections tonight in the ballpark. It is what it is, right. I just go out and play baseball. It’s unfortunate that people need to resort to those type of epithets to degrade another human being. I’m trying to make a living for myself and for my family,” he said, USA Today Sports reported.

“It’s unfortunate. The best thing about myself is that I continue to move on, and still play the game hard. Let people be who they are. Let them show their true colors.’’

Jones informed security after having the bag of peanuts thrown at him in the dugout, and the person was caught and ejected from the ballpark, Red Sox officials confirmed.

“I guess that he was a little disappointed he didn’t get a ball,’’ Jones added, branding the culprit “a coward.”

Games between the Red Sox and Orioles have been volatile this season. Just over a week ago at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland, Boston reliever Matt Barnes threw a ball that flew behind third baseman Manny Machado’s head and hit his bat.

The head-hunting came in retaliation for what the Sox viewed as a dirty slide by Machado into second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s left leg days earlier, injuring him and causing him to miss several games.

The Red Sox reliever was subsequently suspended for four games and fined. Major League Baseball declined to punish Machado for the legal slide.
