Merkel or my wife? Juncker’s mix-up gets laughs at EC press conference (VIDEO)

Jean-Claude Juncker may soon swap his role at the European Commission (EC) for a career in stand-up comedy after cutting Angela Merkel down to size in a bizarre aborted phone call during a press conference.

Juncker discovered his funny bone when mistaking a call from the German chancellor for one from his wife.

“That's my wife calling – sorry,” Juncker said, taking his phone from his pocket at the press conference on Thursday, flanked by Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico and EC Vice-President Maros Sefcovic.

“No, it's Mrs Merkel,” Juncker exclaims before hanging up, prompting a laugh from those in attendance.
