Australian Olympic cyclist charged with drug offences after raid seized substances ‘worth $870k’

Australian cyclist Jack Bobridge has been charged with drug offences after police raided his home in Perth.

Bobridge, who won silver in the men’s pursuit at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, was charged after police with sniffer dogs raided his home on Wednesday and found the haul.

"The investigation led detectives to charge the 28-year-old man with two counts of sell and supply a trafficable quantity of MDMA and three counts of sell and supply MDMA," police said in a statement, abc.net.au reported.

After spending the night in jail, Bobridge appeared in Perth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday charged with six drug offences, whence he was released on a bail bond of AU$10,000 (US$7,900).

A cyclist for Team Trek-Segafredo, Bobridge is also four-time Commonwealth champion and three-time world champion in the team and individual pursuit events and is a world-record holder in the 4km individual pursuit.

He was arrested as part of Operation Inception, which investigated illicit drug dealing within licensed premises in Perth’s entertainment precinct.

It's also reported that the operation has so far uncovered AU$1.1 million (US$870,000) worth of drugs including ecstasy tablets, MDMA capsules and crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, cannabis, GHB, LSD and steroids.

Bobridge is due in court in September.
