Israeli minister resigns over railway works on the Sabbath to stay true to ‘holy values’

Israel’s health minister, Yaakov Litzman announced his resignation on Sunday, saying his decision is based on a public breach of the “holy values of the Jewish people.” The politician from Israel’s ultra-Orthodox political party in Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition cited maintenance works on a railway carried out over the weekend as the reason behind his leaving the post. “We were raised to defend the Sabbath from desecration,” Litzman said as quoted by AP. Prime Minister Netanyahu said he regretted the minister’s decision, stressing that both the Sabbath observance and the need for “safe and continuous” transportation are important to all Israelis.
