Knife attack at Berlin half-marathon foiled by police, 4 detained – reports (VIDEO)

Police foiled an attempted knife attack during the Berlin half-marathon on Sunday. Four men, one of whom is suspected of planning the assault, were detained.

German newspaper Die Welt reports that the four suspects have ties to Berlin truck attacker Anis Amri, the Tunisian man who killed 12 people when he drove a truck into a crowded Christmas market on December 19, 2016.

According to the publication, which cites an unnamed senior Berlin police official, the main suspect had two sharp knives in his possession and was intending to kill spectators as part of a plot to avenge the death of Amri.

Amri escaped the scene of the crime only to be shot dead by Italian police on December 23.

Earlier on Sunday, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer spoke in Muenster following an attack by a German man who drove a campervan into a group of people sitting outside a restaurant, killing two people before shooting himself. He said that, while the government would do its utmost to protect citizens, "absolute security is unfortunately not possible."
