Turkey to maintain presence in Syria until ‘it becomes safe for everyone’ – Erdogan

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that Turkey would maintain its presence and activities in Syria until the country becomes safe for everyone. Erdogan also said he will speak to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin by phone later in the day about the situation in Syria. An alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria’s Douma will be discussed, among other issues, according to the Hurriyet Daily News. “I spoke with [US President Donald] Trump last night. I will speak with Mr. Putin tonight and we will discuss how we can stop this chemical massacre together,” Erdogan said during a ceremony in Ankara. The Russian military has said that a recent alleged chemical weapons attack on civilians in Douma was staged by members of the White Helmets organization.
