UK spy poisoning won’t trigger NATO Article 5 – Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at Leiden University College, The Hague, on Thursday that the spy poisoning incident in Salisbury, Britain, does not fall under Article 5 of the NATO charter on collective defense. The alliance has to respond in a proportionate way, Stoltenberg said after a lecture. It seems that what happened in Salisbury “was not an attack or incident which requires Article 5,” he noted, answering students’ questions. He also said that NATO responded to the “Skripal case” by reducing the number of the Russian permanent mission to NATO. Russia denies any involvement in the incident.
