Far-right League leader Salvini asks Italy’s president for mandate to form govt

The leader of Italy’s far-right League, Matteo Salvini, has asked the president for a mandate to try to form a government, he said on Monday. “We trust that the president will give us the chance to find a majority in parliament,” Salvini told reporters after meeting President Sergio Mattarella. The March 4 ballot resulted in a hung parliament. The center-right bloc took the most seats, while the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement emerged as the biggest single party. It is not clear if Salvini could muster enough votes in parliament to form a government.
