US Supreme Court lifts federal ban on sports betting

The US Supreme Court has given the green light for states to allow sports gambling. The move ends federal legislation which banned state-authorized sports betting with some exceptions and made Nevada the only place where people could bet on the results of a single game. The justices voted 6-3 to strike down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASA), saying that the 1992 law was not consistent with the Constitution. “The legalization of sports gambling requires an important policy choice, but the choice is not ours to make," Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the court. The Monday ruling came out of a case from New Jersey, which fought for years to legalize sports betting at casinos and racetracks.
