Grenfell rehousing effort has been 'too slow', Conservatives admit (VIDEO)

The Conservative Party has admitted that some Grenfell survivors will still be in temporary housing one year on from the tragic blaze that killed 71. Tory MP James Brokenshire said “there is no question… this has been too slow.”

The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government told Commons on Wednesday that of the 210 households that need to be rehoused following the Grenfell fire, 201 – more than 95% – accepted offers of temporary or permanent accommodation from the government. Of those households, only 64 have relocated into temporary accommodation and only 74 have shifted into permanent accommodation.

“As a result, some households will still be in emergency accommodation in June,” Brokenshire said. “It was always going to be a challenge to respond to an unprecedented tragedy on this scale. It has taken time to purchase suitable homes and to adapt and refurbish them to meet people’s needs and the highest safety standards, but this is clearly not good enough…”.

On Wednesday, the UK government announced a £400mn plan to remove dangerous cladding from tower blocks owned by housing associations and council owned blocks.
