Blazing train pulling into station sparks panic (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

A train pulled into a Cape Town station in a blaze of fire and smoke, causing panic amongst commuters on Tuesday.

The Metrorail train from Cape Town to Fish Hoek pulled into Retreat station at about 07:38 on Tuesday morning with the two back carriages on fire. Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said the fire “gutted two carriages” and damaged two others, the Times Live reports.

Fire engines and a rescue vehicle were called to the scene, The South African reports. The overhead high voltage power lines were turned off for safety as firefighters fought the blaze.

There were no injuries caused by the fiery arrival, but commuters experienced delays as a result. The station was running again by 10:30.

According to Fire & Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne, the train driver said she noticed the fire when the train was between the two stations. Scott said it was “far too early” to determine the cause of the fire, but added that a statement would be issued once they know more.
