Poland faces new legal case from EU over Supreme Court changes

The European Union’s executive Commission on Monday opened a fresh legal case against Warsaw for changes to the Polish Supreme Court. Critics say Poland’s legislation undermines the body’s independence and the rule of law. “The Commission is of the opinion that these measures undermine the principle of judicial independence, including the irremovability of judges,” the Brussels-based body said. It gave Poland a month to respond, which means the procedure would not stop the contested new law from entering into force in Poland on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
