Salmonella fears spark massive Ritz Cracker recall across US & Puerto Rico

The makers of Ritz Crackers have warned customers not to consume some of their popular products over fears they have been contaminated with the harmful bacteria salmonella. The company is recalling over a dozen snack lines.

Snack manufacturer Mondelez Global has issued a recall of packages of Ritz Cracker Sandwiches and Ritz Bits across the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

According to the company, the food items contain whey powder, which the supplier has now withdrawn due to the “potential presence of salmonella.” Salmonella is a harmful bacteria that can illness like diarrhea, stomach pain and, in more severe cases, can fatally attack weakened immune systems.

“There have been no complaints of illness reported to Mondelez Global to date in connection with these products. The company is conducting this recall as a precaution, based on the ingredient supplier’s recall,” the company said.

According to the recall list, some 15 types of packaged Ritz Crackers are affected, and people have been warned to discard the potentially contaminated snacks. The US Food and Drug Administration has been informed of the recall.
