US anti-Iran remarks are ‘psychological warfare’ & interference in state matters – Tehran

The recent anti-Iran tirades by the US amount to “psychological warfare” and constitute interference in state matters, Tehran said, following Donald Trump’s capitalized “consequences” tweet and Mike Pompeo’s “mafia” remarks.

US President Donald Trump’s commentary on Tehran “is psychological warfare and he is wrong to act against Iran,” Senior Officer of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Gholamhossein Gheybparvar said in a statement to ISNA news agency on Monday. Tehran “will resist pressure from enemies,” Gheybparvar asserted, adding that America “wants nothing less than to destroy Iran.”

Gheybparvar was apparently referring to Trump’s tweet in capital letters, in which he lashed out at Tehran and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in particular. Trump warned the Iranian leader to “never, ever threaten the United States again” or suffer “consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before.”

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry responded to another ‘arrow’ from Washington, this time coming from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. He pledged American support for “the long-ignored voice of the Iranian people,” calling for an uprising against the Iranian government, which he likened to the “mafia.”

“Pompeo’s speech on Sunday was a clear interference in Iran’s state matters... such policies will unite Iranians who will overcome plots against their country,” Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi Qasemi said, as quoted by ISNA.

Tensions between the US and Iran have been mounting since Trump took office. The US president, a long-time critic of the historic 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, walked away from the agreement this May. The withdrawal came despite the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Tehran’s compliance with the accord on numerous occasions. Even key US allies, including France and Germany, failed to talk US President Donald Trump out of the decision.

On Sunday, Rouhani urged Washington to refrain from provoking Iran unless it wants “the mother of all wars” to break out. “The Americans must understand well that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars,” Rouhani stated, adding that “it would only lead to regret.”
