Floods in Kerala, India leave 324 dead during ‘worst monsoon in century’ – officials

Kerala’s most savage monsoon in a century has killed 324 people over the last nine days, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Friday as the state witnesses the worst monsoon in a century, NDTV reported. The rain will continue until Saturday, according to a fresh alert. The chief minister’s office said in a tweet that “80 dams opened, 324 lives lost and 223,139 people” are in more than 1,500 relief camps. Vijayan said he has spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will reach Kerala in the evening. Currently, 42 Navy, 16 Army, 28 Coastguard and 39 National Disaster Relief Force teams are engaged in rescue operations. The military has pushed in more than 200 boats. Another four aircraft and three Coastguard ships have also been brought in.
