Russia calls for arms embargo against Georgia

Moscow has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for an end to Georgia's militarisation. Russia is urging other countries to stop direct or indirect supply or sale of weapons to Georgia.

Russia's Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin has insisted Georgia's military build-up in the past six months resulted in the use of arms against South Ossetia.

“The Russian delegation introduced today at our consultations an important draft resolution. This is a draft resolution on arms embargo against Georgia,” Churkin said.

“Georgia has been arming very aggressively in the past few years,” he went on.

The military budget of the country, Churkin said, increased from $US 18 million to $US 900 million over the past six years.
