OSCE official: Everyone will draw own conclusions in South Ossetia

OSCE parliamentarians are to discuss the situation in the Caucasus at a session in Toronto at the end of September. One hundred extra observers are being sent to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The observers are being deployed to “make recommendations about what can be done to improve the situation and … co-ordinate with the EU and other international organisations already in the field,” said Oliver.

“Everyone will draw their own conclusions based on the evidence put forward. I haven't drawn any conclusions except that there was some unnecessary violence which should have and probably could have been been avoided. But who was at fault has not yet been determined,” he said.

Having worked in trouble areas in the Balkans and Central Asia, the OSCE has a proven track record in conflict resolution, he added.

Russians didn't fire at Georgian police – FM

Russian servicemen did not fire at a Georgian police checkpoint near the Karaleti village in Georgia, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrey Nesterenko. He also said Russia was not trying to provoke a disturbance in the area.

It follows an incident earlier on Wednesday when a Georgian policeman was shot dead at the checkpoint on the main road leading to South Ossetia.

According to the Georgian side, the gunfire came from the direction of a Russian checkpoint although fire was not returned.

Georgian investigators are now looking into the killing.
