Two Russian tourists found dead in China: four still missing

Rescuers have found the bodies of two of the six Russian canoeists missing in north-western China. A search operation has been taking place since the group failed to return from an expedition on the Yurungkash River.

A search operation began when the student sports team failed to return from an expedition on the Yurungkash River on September 2 as planned.

On Wednesday rescuers using helicopters found equipment belonging to the missing Russians. Shortly afterwards two canoes were discovered on the planned route.

One of the boats was tied near the river bank, while  the other was found broken to pieces about fourteen kilometers downstream.

The rescue team of five landed around four kilometers upstream from where the canoe had been found. They landed on the opposite bank because of its easier terrain. After crossing to the other side of the Yurungkash, the rescuers started their search and found the two bodies.

The search effort has been suspended until the morning.

Six members of the team are staying at the site where the bodies were found,

On Sunday they will be joined by another nine Russian rescuers, as well as three more helicopters. Two are being brought in to help comb the area where the four who are still missing are thought to be. The third helicopter will take the tourists' bodies to the nearest town.
