ISS crew told to hide due to threat of space debris

The International Space Station has been warned about space debris. Ground control in both Russia and the US ordered the crew to briefly hide inside their spacecrafts.

The crew members were allowed to resume work after the debris – reportedly a part of a satellite – flew past the ISS.

On Wednesday, the ISS maneuvered to avoid a collision with a piece of a Chinese weather satellite that was destroyed by a weapon test in 2007.

The crew had two days to prepare for Wednesday’s incident. This time they did not have enough time for maneuvering. In cases such as this, the crew is instructed to retreat to their spaceships for potential evacuation.
