New states need decades to be recognized

South Ossetia is calling on the UN, the EU and the OSCE to recognize its independence along with that of Abkhazia.

It is also demanding the West stop its support of the Georgian military.

So far, only Russia and Nicaragua have recognized the two republics.

Andrey Klimov, the deputy head of the Russian State Duma Committee on International Affairs, is positive that sooner or later both South Ossetia and Abkhazia will be recognized internationally.

He reminded that “For example, Luxembourg was recognized by the Russian state at the beginning of the 19th century and we were alone in it at that time. Today, Luxembourg is a well-known state.”

Klimov said that, theoretically, Georgia may try to regain control over the republics by force.

“Unfortunately, provocations are the key point of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili’s policies.”
