Ak Bars gain a foothold in Moscow

Ak Bars Kazan have taken a 2-1 series lead in their KHL semi-final clash with Dynamo Moscow after a narrow 1-0 win in game three.

The series was tied at one all coming into game three, as the action switched from Kazan to the Russian capital. Dynamo were seemingly in the ascendancy having leveled the tie, after an over time win in game two.

The match started with both sides concentrating on defense, with neither team managing to create any real goal scoring opportunities. Both offences had to feed off scraps, as neither goal tender was really tested, as the teams would go into the first period break goalless.

Defenses continued to dominate in the second period, though Ivan Nepryaev had a decent chance to open the scoring for the home side.

Ak Bars were struggling to get their offensive lines going, and frustration was getting the better of them at times. However, with the interval approaching the game they started to liven up. Grigory Panin had the first real clear cut chance of the game, but unluckily for the Kazan side, his shot rebounded off the post.

Dynamo also had a number of goal scoring opportunities.

Just three minutes into the third, the deadlock was finally broken. A mistake in the Dynamo defense put Danis Zarpiov through, and his wrist shot beat Vitaly Eremeev to put the visitors into a 1-0 lead.

With time running out the Muscovites went desperately in search of an equalizer, but Norrena was proving to be unbeatable.

Meanwhile, Zarpiov had the chance to put the result beyond any doubt, but was unable to get the puck past Eremeev.

Ultimately, Ak Bars managed to hold on and take the series lead. However, Dynamo will be desperate to level up the series, when game four gets underway on Monday.
