Floods kill 14 in Russia’s south

Fourteen people have been killed and nine more are missing after flooding in Russia's southern Krasnodar region. Local authorities have declared Monday a day of mourning for the victims.

The heavy rain caused two major rivers to burst their banks, completely swamping more than 20 villages. More than 1,000 homes were damaged.

Almost 4,000 people were caught in the deluge.

The storm also triggered mudslides in the mountains, blocking several stretches of track on the North Caucasian railway.

Officials say the situation is gradually getting back to normal with vital energy and water supplies being restored. However, the Emergencies Ministry issued a fresh storm warning Monday morning.

On Monday afternoon Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that those who lost property in the disaster will receive 160 thousand rubles (over $5000) per family member in compensations and the families of those killed will receive 1 million rubles (over $30 000) per victim.
