“Robbery of the Century” disclosed

Almost all of the money in one of the biggest robberies in Russian history has been recovered by police, and all suspects detained.

Almost $8 million, which was stolen last week in the Urals, is now back in a bank.

The majority of the money, around $7 million, was found and returned to the bank after security guard Aleksander Shurman, who is the main suspect, was captured late on Tuesday.

Investigators accuse Shurman of holding his colleagues at gunpoint before taking the money from his own security van and hiding it in a forest.

Shurman is said to have led police to the hiding place after being detained. However, the officers couldn’t find the whole sum there. Another million dollars was found on Wednesday after a search in another part of a Perm region forest.

Earlier, on June 26, Shurman's wife, Elena, and his father-in-law, Rashid Salimzhanov, as well as four other people, were detained as suspected co-conspirators in the robbery, while a driver will be tried as an accomplice. Salimzhanov allegedly hid the remaining 1 million rubles – around $30,000 – but so far he hasn’t managed to recall its exact location.

Thus, all the money, except for Salimzhanov’s “minor” stash, is back in Sberbank’s possession, while all suspects have been detained. According to Russian law, Shurman could now face up to 15 years behind bars.
