Astroturf campaigns, direct action for disability rights, & organizing healthcare workers
Lee opens the show this week by exposing the world of astroturf community organizing. This is where wealthy interests pay organizers to make fake grassroots campaigns against progressive issues. Astroturf campaigns have targeted people fighting against fossil fuel infrastructure projects, war, and the health insurance industry. Recent reporting uncovered institutional backing for the violent counter-protesters in the showdown at the Venezuelan Embassy in DC last month. Then Lee brings attention to the many people who engaged in direct action protests over the last week including the 80 disability rights activists who were arrested in Washington DC and the Italian dock workers who refused to load a ship with weapons headed to the genocide in Yemen.
In the second half of the show, Natalie McGill reports on how five states are suing the Trump administration over a new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid rule that won’t allow home healthcare workers to deduct union fees from their Medicaid-funded paychecks. This is yet another attack on worker protections that will disproportionately affect women — especially minority and immigrant women. Then Naomi Karavani finishes off the show by uncovering a corporate connection with the newest attack on abortion rights in several right wing states.
